In honor of National Beer Day we decided to revisit the craft beer industry in San Diego as it continues to experience unprecedented growth. According to the National University System Institute for Policy Research, the industry’s economic value to the region has doubled in the last three years, from $300 million in 2011 to $600 million in 2014. Similarly, industry employment has also experienced incredible growth. In 2011, the craft brewing industry employed 1,630 workers. In 2014, employment jumped over 130 percent to 3,752 workers.
JLL initially mapped all the local breweries in August 2014 (based on data from the San Diego Brewers Guild) to see where they were situated across the county. We updated the heat map, as seen above, to include new breweries and brewpubs since then. The updated map shows that there are still high concentrations of breweries in Vista, San Marcos, Miramar, Mira Mesa, Downtown, and North Park, representing three distinct clusters in the county. The number of breweries and brewpubs increased to over 120 from less than 100 last year, with significant growth in the North Park neighborhood as new breweries opened and existing breweries expanded with additional locations/tasting rooms. Over two-thirds of the county’s breweries are located in these three clusters. With increased demand for well-located and functional industrial space and relatively low vacancy rates for manufacturing and warehouse product types in these three clusters, will breweries have to expand to areas outside of these three clusters? Is a brewery opening soon in a neighborhood near you? Seems as though happy days are beer again. Enjoy a local pint today! Cheers!
