JLL’s Jay Alexander has been named one of San Diego Metro Magazine’s Metro Movers to Watch. As an established mover and shaker in San Diego’s commercial real estate industry, Jay Alexander made headlines when he moved over to JLL five years from another well-known brokerage firm. Recruited to establish and lead JLL’s landlord representation team, Jay’s influence and success is based in part on his ability to build and maintain a large network of influential contacts. JLL’s landlord representation team has built a reputation for marketing some of the San Diego’s most iconic office buildings and providing their clients with the knowledge, research and resources of a global real estate services company. He has leveraged his tremendous people and professional skills to build a successful real estate career (his transaction value for sales and leases exceeds $3 billion) and to change the lives of less fortunate families in San Diego and across the Mexican border.
Jay is among the very top commercial real estate brokers in San Diego. In 2013, in addition to his leadership role with the landlord representation team, Jay assumed responsibility for leading the entire San Diego office of JLL, which has more than 80 employees. Jay quickly catapulted JLL, despite the challenging market, to become a market leader in San Diego and now oversees all business lines (tenant rep, property management, project development, retail and capital markets) in addition to maintaining his role as leader of the landlord representation team.
Thanks to Jay’s efforts, JLL grew from virtually no landlord representation in San Diego to marketing over 10 million square feet of space in five years. His team has landed such high-profile assignments as The Aventine La Jolla, Paseo Del Mar, Towne Center Technology Park, The San Diego Tech Center and Sorrento Towers North & South. Clients include such high quality landlords as Arden, Prudential, Beacon Capital, Locale Advisors, Kilroy Realty, Starwood Capital, McCarthy and Cook, TA Realty and TIAA/CREF.
Jay has positively impacted many lives and is a leading influence on the commercial real estate brokerage industry in San Diego. He is consistently one of the top producers in San Diego’s commercial real estate brokerage community and has elevated JLL to become one of the top firms in San Diego real estate services.
Jay has led a brokerage team in the Baja Challenge since its inception 15 years ago, through which he has raised money and helped construct a new house for a deserving Tijuana family each year. He and his wife, Mary Ann, also organize donations for Casa de los Pobres in Tijuana, a free clinic that offers medical care and social services to the very poor in Mexico. Jay also very actively supports his wife’s membership and work with Las Patronas, a philanthropic organization that has donated more than $17 million to more than 1,000 charities in San Diego since 1946. Through his tireless work to make a difference in the San Diego/Tijuana community, Jay is able to make a positive impact in not just one region, but in two.
This past year, Jay worked with Petco to facilitate their efforts to invest multiple millions of dollars to keep their headquarters in San Diego and build a nationally-significant office/industrial project. He also helped retain Sony Computer Entertainment as a tenant for the San Diego Tech Center – a lease for more than 190K square feet of space.
Jay was selected as a San Diego County Commercial Association of Realtors (SDCCAR) Deal Maker of the Year five times and has been a perpetual Costar Power Broker. He was past president and treasurer of Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) San Diego chapter and was one of the original members of the local Chapter. He has also served as a board member of the San Diego County Commercial Association of Realtors and on the board of NAIOP San Diego.
